Man dies after pick-up truck hits spectators at Florida Pride parade

Police investigate the scene where a pickup truck drove into a crowd of people at a Pride parade

The driver of a pickup truck slammed into a crowd gathering for a Pride parade yesterday in south Florida, killing at least one man, USA media reports said.

Chris Caputo, a city commissioner in Wilton Manors, tweeted late Saturday that it was 'increasingly probable it was an accident'.

Some reports online indicate the driver of the truck was wearing a Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus shirt at the time.

"This is a terrorist attack against the LGBT community", he said.

Local broadcaster WSVN quoted Fort Lauderdale's Mayor Dean Trantalis as saying the driver acted as if they were part of the parade before accelerating.

"We anticipate more details to follow and ask for the community's love and support".

"A tragic incident occurred at today's Stonewall event", Wilton Manors Mayor Scott Newton said in a statement, according to WPLG-TV. The truck reportedly narrowly missed striking the vehicle in which Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) was riding, preparing to participate in the parade.

Police have not yet said if the crash was intentional. "Fort Lauderdale Police and Wilton Manors Police send our deepest condolences to those injured and to those affected".

Video from CNN affiliate WPLG showed a man being taken into police custody shortly after the incident, but Adamson would not say whether he was suspected of a crime.

While the truck appeared to be taking part in the procession, it was not immediately clear if the crash was a deliberate assault or an accident. The Florida lawmaker later confirmed on Twitter that she, her staff and others were safe.

She said the FBI is also involved in the investigation. "I am so heartbroken by what took place at this celebration", she wrote.

"I am deeply shaken and devastated that a life was lost and others seriously injured at tonight's @WiltonManorsCty Stonewall #Pride Parade".

"We were at the start of the parade, right in front of Fort Lauderdale High School".

"All of a sudden there was a loud revving of a truck and a crash through a fence", Currie said.

"It was definitely an intentional act right across the lanes of traffic".

Police investigate the scene where a pickup truck drove into a crowd of people at a Pride parade on June 19, 2021 in Wilton Manors, Florida.

"This tragedy took place within feet of me and my BSO team, and we are devastated having witnessed this horrific incident", Gregory added.

June is Pride Month, which commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots sparked by repeated police raids on a popular gay bar in NY.
