Dem Representative Blasts Canada Decision to Extend Border Restrictions as 'Bulls

U.S.-Canada border could reopen to fully vaccinated travellers July 21: Legault

Border restrictions on nonessential travel with the United States will be extended until July 21, officials said Friday, as Canada works to get a higher percentage of Canadians fully vaccinated.

Restrictions were previously scheduled to lift on Monday.

'The government is planning measures for fully vaccinated Canadians, Permanent Residents, and others who are now permitted to enter Canada and will provide further details on Monday, June 21, ' he tweeted.

Border restrictions have been in place since March 2020.

Calls for the relaxing of pandemic border controls between the countries have intensified, particularly in light of a Washington announcement that the United States would send additional vaccine doses to Canada.

Canada only started getting US manufactured vaccines in May as the USA didn't allow for exports until then.

Goldy Hyder, president of the Business Council of Canada, which represents Canada's largest employers, called for a clearly articulated plan to reopen the border safely "so that friends and families can be reunited and businesses can welcome back travellers".

By the fall, Trudeau said he hoped to "establish a national certification of vaccination status".

Since leaving the White House , Trump has regularly made baseless claims that the last presidential election was stolen. The origin of the virus remains hotly contested, and is under study by US intelligence agencies.

The Canadian government expects to have enough vaccine delivered for 80 percent of eligible Canadians to be fully vaccinated by the end of July.

"We are the deer caught in the headlights, unable to move", Beatty said in an interview.

In the "medium-term", Trudeau said, there will be a more formal federal program tied to provincial health records which will give border guards access to vaccination records. "What the government is doing flies in the face of science, of economics and good public policy".

"Travellers would have to be fully vaccinated 14 days or more prior to their arrival and they will still be required to have a negative pre-departure PCR test result, and required to be tested upon arrival".

Legault's government had encouraged people 45 and over to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine before it stopped administering first doses of the vaccine due to concerns about rare blood clots and with increased availability of other vaccines. "It's another nail in the coffin for the the summer tourism season for Canadians".

Last week, Minister of Health, Patty Hajdu, said the federal government is looking to loosen border restrictions, then teasing that some changes may come into place in early July, largely focused on the hotel quarantine measure.

Trudeau said that for the initial phase, the federal government is working with the ArriveCAN app to allow individuals to upload a picture of their proof of vaccination so border agent can confirm they are fully vaccinated.
