Covid-19: NI records 178 new cases and no further deaths

Alberta Health Services confirms a patient in their 80s, who had received two doses of MRNA vaccine before contracting the Delta variant, died in an outbreak at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

Some 33,630 cases of the variant were recorded in the last week, according to the PHE.

According to the analysis, as of June 14, a total of 806 people have been hospitalised with the Delta variant, an increase of 423 since last week.

The case fatality rate remains low for Delta.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Dr Holohan said the North is facing a "significant challenger" from the spread of the variant in some areas, describing Derry as a "hotspot" due to the town's incidence of 130 cases per 100,000 people. It is encouraging to see that hospitalisations and deaths are not rising at the same rate but we will continue to monitor it closely.

"So we're pressing ahead to try to make sure we have those remaining staff members offered the vaccine, taking up the vaccine, but if you can do it voluntarily then I think that is a much stronger basis from which to go on persuading people to do the right thing".

The total number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in Northern Ireland since the start of the pandemic is 2,155.

There were 15,893 possible reinfections with SARS-CoV-2 identified up to May 30 in England throughout the pandemic, out of almost 4 million people with confirmed infections.

In response to those outbreaks, AHS says vaccines were given to those in hospital at risk of exposure to the Delta variant - also known as B.1.617.2, that was first identified in India.

PHE said there is now no evidence that the Delta VOC, or any other VOCs, are more likely to cause reinfection than others, but that it continues to closely monitor this and other reinfection data.

The most recent data shows 99% of confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus across the country are the Delta variant.

The PHE data shows that 75,953 confirmed and probable cases of the Covid-19 Delta variant have now been found in the United Kingdom - up by 33,630, or 79%, on the previous week.
