Senate passes bill to establish Juneteenth as a national holiday

Juneteenth Celebrations And Marches Across America

Many Black Americans have celebrated Juneteenth for decades.

"Mayor Elorza and the City's Human Resources Department are pleased to announce that, in observance of the newly-recognized Juneteenth holiday on June 19, 2021, City of Providence employees will be granted a paid day off, and regular City operations will be closed on Friday, June 18, 2021". Alabama also recognizes the state holidays of Confederate Memorial Day, celebrated in April, and Robert E. Lee's birthday, celebrated the same day as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Emancipation Proclamation took effect at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 1863, legally freeing all enslaved people in Confederate states.

The bill is sponsored by Sen.

"While it still seems odd that having taxpayers provide federal employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery, it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter", the Republican senator said in a statement Tuesday morning.

The day commemorates June 19, 1865, when slaves in Texas learned of the executive order marking the last day of slavery in the United States.

"The stakes are a little different", Mark Anthony Neal, a Duke University African American studies professor, told the New York Times last June.

The National Juneteenth Observance Foundation, an association based in MS, has worked for years to get Juneteenth officiated as a national holiday.

Downing Street said there was "nothing in the data" to suggest a delay would be needed. The rise in rates has yet to be mirrored by a steady increase in hospital cases.

The Senate bill passed as Congress grapples with legislation to protect the rights of minority voters while trying to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to shore up accountability for law enforcement.

Mr Johnson did not oppose the measure again on Tuesday, though he said in a statement to the Washington Post that he was still concerned about the cost.

Juneteenth "has been a state holiday in Texas for more than 40 years", he said.

After the death of George Floyd, which sparked racial injustice protests across the country, Jack Dorsey. Edward Markey, D-Mass., and had 60 co-sponsors.

In 1980, Texas became the first state to observe Juneteenth as an official holiday.

"We certainly understand the need to move this legislation expeditiously and want to cooperate with you in every way in that regard", said Republican Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma.

The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday.
