"She was very generous", Biden said.

Between the events, American reporters asked Kate if she had any wishes for her new niece, Lilibet Diana.

The 95-year-old British monarch, wearing a bright pink floral outfit, greeted the Bidens in the Quadrangle of the castle, home to the royal family for almost 1,000 years and where she has spent much of her time since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Biden said they had spoken about Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's leader Xi Jinping.

"She's extremely gracious, that's not surprising, but we had a great talk".

Asked if he'd invited her to the White House, Biden said he had.

Reporters were not allowed in the castle for the talks, though they heard the queen and the president engaged in polite conversation as they walked into Windsor.

The auto pulled up - a few minutes ahead of schedule - and out stepped President Biden, wearing dark glasses, holding his wife's hand as they walked up the dais steps to meet the Queen.

He added: "She said, "What's it like in the White House?' I said, 'Well it's magnificent but it's a lot of people".

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II waits for the arrival of US President Joe Biden at Windsor Castle near London, Sunday, June 13, 2021.

Queen Elizabeth II even went horseback riding with President Ronald Reagan, when in 1982 he became the first US president to stay overnight at Windsor Castle.

The Bidens became the fourth president and first lady the queen has received at Windsor, following the Trumps in 2018, the Obamas in 2016, President George W. Bush and his wife in 2008 and the Reagans in 1982.

The Bidens were greeted by the Queen's Guard of Honor and then retired to a private tea within the castle.

Mr and Mrs Biden met the Queen for the first time on Friday when she attended a reception for G7 leaders at the Eden Project. She has since met almost every American president (Lyndon Johnson was the exception) who served during her 69 years on the throne.

She appeared to take a special liking to President Obama, whom she met three times during his presidency, including hosting a 2011 state dinner that included a two-night stay at Buckingham Palace. "Don't you bow down to her", Biden was told, according to a memoir.

The traditional Trooping the Colour ceremony, which is normally staged in London, was ruled out for the second successive year because of the threat of coronavirus.

In 2008, when then United States president George W Bush met with the monarch at Windsor, he enjoyed a traditional English afternoon spread of tea, small sandwiches and cakes in the White Drawing Room.

It was due to last around half-an-hour, but overran by nearly 20 minutes. They also had afternoon tea together in the Oak Room.
