"Rep. Omar should be removed from [the House Foreign Affairs Committee] and some".

In the tweet that set off the dispute, Omar wrote: "We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity".

"We welcome the clarification by Congresswoman Omar that there is no moral equivalency between the USA and Israel and Hamas and the Taliban", they said. "I asked @SecBlinken where people are supposed to go for justice", Omar said in the tweet. "We urge Congresswoman Omar to clarify her words placing the USA and Israel in the same category as Hamas and the Taliban".

"We welcome the clarification by Congresswoman Omar that there is no moral equivalency between the United States and Israel and Hamas and the Taliban", wrote the group of senior Democrats.

"Legitimate criticism of the policies of both the United States and Israel is protected by the values of free speech and democratic debate", they said. "And indeed, such criticism is essential to the strength and health of our democracies", their statement read.

In a bid to end the controversy, the Democratic leaders said they "welcome the clarification by Congresswoman Omar that there is no moral equivalency between the USA and Israel and Hamas and the Taliban".

Naim lauded Omar for her "support of justice and the rights of the oppressed around the world", in particular for the "just rights" of the Palestinians. Brad Schneider, Jake Auchincloss, Ted Deutch, Lois Frankel, Josh Gottheimer, Elaine Luria, Kathy Manning, Jerrold Nadler, Dean Phillips, Kim Schrier, Brad Sherman, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

In their statement, the House Democratic leadership responded to Omar's clarification, writing: "We welcome the clarification by Congresswoman Omar that there is no moral equivalency between the USA and Israel and Hamas and the Taliban".

Omar had posted footage on Monday of her questioning Blinken at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing over the Biden administration's opposition to International Criminal Court investigations in Afghanistan, Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.

In her later statement, Omar said her conversation with Blinken "was about accountability for specific incidents regarding those ICC cases, not a moral comparison between Hamas and the Taliban and the U.S. and Israel". This is especially true since this is not the first time that she's made these types of remarks.

Omar, a Muslim immigrant from Somalia, hit back at her colleagues for publicly criticizing her instead of discussing their objections with her privately.

Rather than apologize, Ms. Omar fired off a defiant response on Thursday morning. She later said, "I was in no way equating terrorist organizations with democratic countries with well-established judicial systems".

In remarks that drew the most attention, she said, "We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the US, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban". In 2019, her Twitter comment that support in Washington for Israel was "all about the Benjamins baby" kicked off weeks of fighting that ended in a resolution on the House floor condemning bigotry and anti-Semitism. "She has the courage to call out human rights abuses no matter who is responsible", Tlaib tweeted.

Some Jewish Democrats hesitated to make a statement. The Muslim lawmaker of Somali origin has been lambasted not only by rightist trolls, but also by her Democratic colleagues, while she has received death threats as well. "Talk to us directly".

Meanwhile, several House Republicans have called on Pelosi to remove Omar from her committee assignments.

The House GOP's campaign arm, chaired by Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer, helped led the criticism Tuesday along with Republican members of Congress. Arkansas Sen.
