Democrats Demand Investigation of Trump-Era Seizure of Lawmakers' Data

Adam Schiff DOJ must ‘clean house’ after Trump caught spying on Democrats

This announcement comes on the heels of stunning new reporting from the New York Times that during a Trump-era leak investigation, prosecutors actually subpoenaed Apple directly for the accounts of Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell - both on the House Intelligence Committee - and their aides and family members, apparently even including one minor.

Ultimately, none of the data or other evidence tied the lawmakers or the House Intelligence Committee to the leaks, the Times said.

The records do not contain any other content from the devices, like photos, messages or emails, one of the other people said.

Michael Cohen told Insider the Justice Department was corrupted by former President Donald Trump.

Ranking Senate Judiciary Committee member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), said Friday he supports the IG's investigation into the matter. David Laufman, a former Justice Department official who worked on leak investigations, told the Times that Trump had "an unmistakeable vendetta against Congressman Schiff", and this "raises serious questions about whether the manner in which this investigation was conducted was influenced by political considerations rather than purely legal ones".

The records of at least twelve people connected to the intelligence panel were eventually shared, including Chairman Adam Schiff, who was then the top Democrat on the committee. Swalwell, confirming that he was told his records were seized, told CNN Thursday evening that he was aware a minor was involved and "I believe they were targeted punitively and not for any reason in law".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, said in a statement that "these actions appear to be yet another egregious assault on our democracy" waged by the former president.

Canadian family killed in ramming were targeted for being Muslim
Police are in contact with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police about whether terrorism charges should be pursued, Waight said. His comments come after police said the motorist that killed the four family members did so deliberately.

In their joint statement Friday, Schumer and Durbin said that in addition to Barr, Sessions and other officials testifying, the Justice Department "must provide information and answers to the Judiciary Committee, which will vigorously investigate this abuse of power".

Schiff, now the panel's chair, confirmed in a statement Thursday evening (local time) that the Justice Department had informed the committee in May that the investigation was closed.

The Times report says Apple was under a gag order that expired this year.

At least a dozen people in total were impacted, The New York Times reported, in an attempt to uncover the source of leaks to the press about Trump associates and their dealings with Russian Federation.

But the leak investigations were revived by attorney general Bill Barr a year later, the paper reported. "It is exactly what they thought he would change, and he was the ugliest example of the problem I've ever seen".

According to the Times, prosecutors working under then attorney general Jeff Sessions made unusual efforts to find the source of the leaks of classified information.
