Ontario to present new COVID-19 projections today ahead of Friday reopening

This 'vaccibus' is now making the rounds in the Outaouais delivering both first and second doses

Those areas include Halton, Peel, Porcupine, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph and York.

According to the latest dashboard update, almost 33,000 people in the region have been fully vaccinated, including 3,229 people in the last 24 hour reporting period.

The province said it was basing its second-dose strategy on a "first-in, first-out" approach to ensure those prioritized for initial inoculations would remain prioritized for second shots.

The data also shows testing numbers have dropped. "When we say it is the dominant form of the virus that just means it makes up the largest percentage of cases, not necessarily that it is growing absolutely".

More restrictions will loosen after 21 days if pandemic indicators improve and more people get vaccinated.

But Brown said that he believes that it can be controlled by accelerating second doses in hot spot communities that are experiencing a rapid rise in Delta cases.

Quebec shortens wait between doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine to eight weeks
Acceleration of AstraZeneca second doses will proceed on a 12-week interval, with booking eligibility based on date of first dose. Moving up the second dose is optional and people will keep their original appointments if they don't re-book for an earlier shot.

The Alpha variant - originally identified in the United Kingdom - is the dominant strain in the province and responsible for much of there third wave of cases, is 40 per cent more transmissible than the original strain of COVID-19, says Dr. Gerald Evans, an infectious disease specialist at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Queen's University, in Kingston, Ont.

The 12-week interval for people who got the AstraZeneca shot will still apply in delta variant "hotspots", the ministry confirmed to reporters later - even as it starts a program to accelerate second shots for people who got mRNA vaccines in those areas.

Increasing first and second dose coverage in Delta hot spots will help to minimize the risk of the variant's spread in Ontario, protecting all neighbourhoods provincewide, officials stated.

And ICU capacity is expected below 200 by next month, it's now at 450.

The modelling forecasts that adherence to public health measures could bring the number of COVID-19 patients in ICU below 200 by mid-July which would allow hospitals to begin resuming their normal operations. "What needs to be discussed at the Ontario level is this gain in earlier protection for more people when they get their second dose".

Concerns were also raised at the meeting over Waterloo Region's weekly incidence rate of about 54 cases per 100,000, which sits above the provincial average and Toronto's average of 40.7.
