Canadian family killed in ramming were targeted for being Muslim

In Mississauga, Mayor Bonnie Crombie took to Twitter to express her condolences saying she's "Devastated by the act of terror that took place against the Muslim community in London, Ontario".

His comments come after police said the motorist that killed the four family members did so deliberately.

Police have not yet released the victims' names, but the London Free Press said that among the dead were Syed Afzaal, 46, his wife, Madiha Salman, 44, and their 15-year-old daughter, Yumnah Afzaal. The 20-year-old was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Police in London, Ont. have charged a suspect with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder after he allegedly hit five pedestrians due to their Islamic faith, killing four members of the same family.

"To the loved ones of those who were terrorized by yesterday's act of hatred, we are here for you".

He says Muslims in Canada are too familiar with the violence of Islamophobia, with recent attacks on Muslim women in Alberta and the 2017 Quebec City mosque massacre.

Police are in contact with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police about whether terrorism charges should be pursued, Waight said. A nine-year-old boy is recovering in hospital from serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he is "horrified" by the news.

Veltman was scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.

"Words fail on a day as dark as this but words matter, " Mayor Ed Holder said.

"Islamophobia and hate have no place in this country. This hate is insidious and despicable - and it must stop".

One man who described himself as a neighbor in an interview with Global News, said he met with the family on holidays.

"We understand that this event may cause fear and anxiety in the community, particularly in the Muslim community, in any community targeted by hate".

Paige Martin, a resident of the city roughly 120 miles southwest of Toronto, told local media that she was returning from getting gas when she came upon a scene of "chaos" in the "seemingly mostly quiet neighborhood".

"He was a family guy, very much involved in the community, a regular member of our mosque, a really, really great father", the neighbor, who was not identified, said of Syed Afzaal.

"Hate can not win, and every person in Canada must feel safe in their identity", she said. It's bad, this family is just out for walk. "Not tomorrow. Today. For the sake of our children, our families, our communities".

"This is a terrorist attack on Canadian soil and should be treated as such", said Mustafa Farooq, chief executive of the National Council of Canadian Muslims.
