US to swiftly boost global vaccine sharing, Biden announces

39;Get a shot and have a beer': Biden woos Americans with incentives for vaccine

But Canada and the United Kingdom are the only two G7 countries which bought doses from COVAX as well as donated money to buy doses for lower income nations.

"The [Biden] administration will pursue several additional measures beyond our robust funding for COVAX: Donating from the U.S. vaccine supply to the world and encouraging other nations to do the same, working with U.S. manufacturers to increase vaccine production for the rest of the world, and helping more countries expand their own capacity to produce vaccines including through support for global supply chains", the White House said. The long-awaited vaccine sharing plan comes as demand for shots in the US has tailed off, and as global inequities in supply have become more glaring.

Soon, the doses that some Americans shun will be diverted overseas, where they will be appreciated by those who are desperate to be inoculated in order to have their lives return to something approaching normalcy.

"The sharing of millions of US vaccines with other countries signals a major commitment by the USA government", the White House said in a fact sheet that called the plans "a vital component of our overall global strategy to lead the world in the fight to defeat COVID-19". The administration says 25 per cent will be kept in reserve for emergencies and for the U.S.to share directly with allies and partners.

For doses shared through COVAX, the U.S. plans to prioritise Latin America and the Caribbean, South and Southeast Asia, and Africa, in coordination with the African Union, the White House said in its statement. "We are sharing these vaccines to save lives and to lead the world in bringing an end to the pandemic, with the power of our example and with our values", Biden said.

"And the United States is committed to bringing the same urgency to worldwide vaccination efforts that we have demonstrated at home".

The US has agreed to provide some 1 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to South Korea as a result of Biden's May 21 summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Washington. USA vaccines are far safer and more effective than those coming out of China or Russia, Romney said.

Vice President Kamala Harris already informed the leaders of several nations that they will soon begin receiving their doses.

"We're not asking anything of the people of Gaza and West Bank, but we feel that given what they are dealing with in the situation on the ground there, it is only right and proper and good for the United States to actually allocate some doses to that country", he said.

The president has also promised to share 20 million doses from existing production of Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccine stocks.

Four new COVID cases connected to outbreak
Melburnians are being warned the number of cases could grow. "It's possible there's another missing link", Professor Sutton said. On Tuesday, gathering and mask restrictions were announced for greater Melbourne following the outbreak in the Australian city.

Now, the USA will be sharing enough shots with staunch ally South Korea to enable the 550,000 troops from that nation who serve alongside American soldiers to become inoculated.

Canada isn't producing any COVID-19 vaccines of its own, but has also been criticized for not sharing any doses of imported vaccines.

According to Dr. Seth Berkley, the CEO of Gavi, which is leading the COVAX effort, "Frontline workers and at-risk populations will receive potentially life-saving vaccinations", bringing the globe "a step closer to ending the acute phase of the pandemic".

Biden has committed to providing other nations with all 60 million US -produced doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has yet to be authorized for use in America but is widely approved around the world.

The doses, which were produced in the United States, have been held up, unable to be exported, because the AstraZeneca vaccine is still being reviewed by the US' Food and Drug Administration.

The 80 million doses will come from AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna. Even more doses are expected to be made available to share in the months ahead.

Harris had herself called Modi and informed him about the vaccines, reported the Hindustan Times. "I expressed to her our appreciation in the name of the people of Mexico", he wrote. "We are setting up for failure if we don't get early doses".

As part of its purchase agreements with the pharmaceutical companies, the federal government controlled the distribution of the vaccines.

Pfizer has begun independently exporting millions of its US -made shots largely to countries in Central and South America, Reuters reported last month. The U.S. has hundreds of millions more doses on order, both of authorized and in-development vaccines.
