Doug Ford just asked everyone for advice about schools

Will in-class learning resume in Ontario before summer break?20 hours ago2:02

"Keeping children safe is our foremost consideration, which is why as experts in health, public health, and education we are seeking your perspective".

On the other hand, Ford mentioned how cancelled classes present mental health, academic, and other challenges for students, amplified for children who come from poor families or who experience racism.

On Thursday, Ford sent a letter to dozens of health experts and stakeholders asking for their input on reopening schools.

Premier Doug Ford is ready to listen to opinions on whether schools should reopen this year.

But Ford said he doesn't want to rely exclusively on the advice of the province's top public health official, Dr. David Williams, who believes students should return to the classroom.

Premier Doug Ford has sent a letter to pediatric and medical experts, local medical officers of health, and the province's education partners about a potential return to in-person learning.

While Ford says he wants schools open again, his three-page letter seeking advice strikes a anxious and negative tone.

In the letter, he raised a number of specific concerns around a return to the classroom in June, including the presence of the B.1.6.1.7 variant that was first detected in India.

Ontario's Science Advisory Table has previously suggested that reopening schools would only result in a "manageable" six to 11 per cent increase in case counts. It notes a lack of consensus on how, when and whether schools should reopen.

It should be noted that while Ford has so far refused to commit to reopening schools a number of top children's hospitals, including SickKids, have repeatedly advocated for a return to the classroom.

De Villa also says studies have shown transmission risk appears to be low where there are comprehensive COVID-19 measures in place.

Dr. Lawrence Loh, the medical officer of health for Peel Region, said key COVID-19 indicators support the resumption of in-person learning.

Is the reopening of schools for in-person learning safe for teachers and all education staff?

"York Region Public Health considers re-opening schools low risk and the right thing to do for students, teachers and all education workers".

The premier also addressed Friday continued pressure to reopen schools.

"If we were directed by the ministry to return to in-person learning this school year, we should be able to get up and running relatively quickly - perhaps a few days", Ryan Bird said.

Other countries are warning mutations including the B.1.617 variant45 are putting children at much greater risk and are shutting schools down.

Dr. David Williams, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, has also said he wants students back in school as soon as possible.

Ontario is moving forward with second doses of vaccines and the Premier says everyone will be fully vaccinated by the end of August.

The Toronto District School Board said it hadn't heard from the government about resuming in-person learning as of Wednesday, but schools would be prepared to reopen.

"Since the beginning of the pandemic, Ontario's teachers and education workers have supported the safe, regional reopening of schools", the unions wrote.
