US Chinese embassy says politicising Covid origins hampers investigations

A day after President Joe Biden ordered United States intelligence to probe the origins of coronavirus, President Xi Jinping's regime said the USA was attempting to make a "scapegoat" out of China.

He said most intelligence entities don't believe there's sufficient information to reach a conclusion about the virus' origins, and the three intel entities that lean toward one explanation or another only have "low or moderate confidence" in their conclusions.

"We hope the USA could cooperate with the WHO to conduct a comprehensive, transparent and evidence-based investigation to respond to concerns from the worldwide community and to contribute to the handling of public health emergencies in the future", said the spokesperson.

The president said he has asked the intelligence community to redouble their efforts to collect and analyze information and to report back in 90 days. "The failure to get our inspectors on the ground in those early months will always hamper any investigation into the origin of COVID-19".

This revelation comes at a time when there's a renewed focus on the Wuhan Lab Leak theory over Coronavirus origins.

The natural origin hypothesis - backed as the most likely by the World Health Organization expert team who visited China - holds that the virus emerged in bats then passed to humans, likely via an intermediary species.

Associated Press White House reporter Jonathan Lemire appeared bitter about how former President Trump and other prominent Republicans had suggested a year ago that the coronavirus leaked out of a Wuhan lab in China. "Smear campaign and blame-shifting are making a comeback, and the conspiracy theory of "lab leak" is resurfacing", said the embassy in a statement.

In 2019 he left Belarus because of the threat to his freedom for cooperation with the independent Telegram channel Nexta . Belarusian opposition journalist Roman Protasevich arrives for a court hearing in Minsk, Belarus , April 10, 2017.

Trump issued a statement on Tuesday touting that "I was right" about the virus's origins even though he was "badly criticized" at the time.

Most scientists continue to think the virus is more likely to be natural in origin.

"You know, China wasn't transparent enough", Biden stated.

The World Health Organization, which Facebook has long relied on in shaping its coronavirus policies, has "all hypotheses remain open" though its researchers have said the lab theory is unlikely.

While claims that the virus was man-made are not necessarily the same as it coming from the lab, officials appear to be leaning toward investigating the origins further and are open to more scrutiny on the lab theory.

The Chinese Embassy in the United States on Wednesday also refuted the USA attempt to politicize the issue, saying the move gives free rein to the "political virus" and seriously hamper global cooperation on the pandemic.
