Every jab's a victor as California offers $115.5 million in vaccine lottery

California to give US$116.5 mil in prizes for vaccinations

Ten Californians stand to win lottery-style prizes of US$1.5 million apiece.

"A total of 30 winners will be selected for the "$50,000 Fridays" cash prize drawings on June 4 and June 11. Winners under the age of 18 will have their winnings put into savings accounts for when they are of-age.

The move by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is part of an effort to boost vaccinations as the state prepares to fully reopen its economy on June 15.

In addition, the next two million residents to start and complete the vaccination process will receive a US$50 pre-paid grocery card, good for use at most of California's major grocery chains.

Not vaccinated? Next 2 million that get fully vaccinated can ALSO get a $50 card.

The state just announced a $116.5 million program that combines an automatic lottery for the already vaccinated with gift cards for the newly vaccinated as well as a lottery for those still getting their shots, with prizes up to $1.5 million for individuals - including kids 12 and up.

Under the state's new "Vax for the Win" campaign, launched Thursday, residents 12 years or older who are at least partially vaccinated will be eligible for cash prizes awarded in a series of three drawings in June.

"These are real incentives", Newsom said during a press briefing Thursday announcing the program.

Four new COVID cases connected to outbreak
Melburnians are being warned the number of cases could grow. "It's possible there's another missing link", Professor Sutton said. On Tuesday, gathering and mask restrictions were announced for greater Melbourne following the outbreak in the Australian city.

Still an estimated 12 million Californians who are eligible still haven't received a single shot.

Across the U.S., states and private organisations have offered incentives to persuade people to become inoculated against Covid-19, which has killed almost 3.7 people worldwide.

Newsom said he hopes to get over 70% of adults vaccinated by June 15, and "significantly increase" the number of younger residents.

"You don't have to register to do this as is the case in other states", Newsom said in comments today. The number of people getting their first shots dropped notably in the past week, and the state is trying to not go off a cliff in the next week or two, Newsom said.

"We can't afford to run the 90-yard dash", he said.

California is giving away the country's largest pot of vaccine prize money, $116.5 million, in an attempt to get millions more inoculated before the most populous USA state fully reopens next month. "We've got to finish the job".

On Wednesday, Ohio, which popularized the idea, announced the first victor of its much-anticipated "Vaxx-a-Million" sweepstakes, which ultimately will award $1 million each to five residents who have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot.

Starting this week, New Yorkers can get a free lottery ticket potentially worth up to $5 million if they get vaccinated at state-run vaccination sites.
