COVID-19: downward trends continue as Alberta starts May long weekend

St. Albert's active COVID-19 cases continue to drop

It's the lowest such rate recorded in Alberta since March 27, eight weeks ago.

Alberta Health Services is watching closely to see if there's an increase in no-shows for COVID-19 vaccine appointments.

Total active cases fell from over 22,000 to 15,502 in that span.

The province completed 9,038 tests in the past 24 hours.

With the exception of those in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo - where the rate of active cases remain high - all Alberta students will return to their classrooms following the long weekend.

ICU admissions held steady at 177.

Hospitalizations dropped Friday to 638 people receiving treatment, down from 665 on Thursday.

As of May 18, 332,276 Albertans have been fully immunized with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, while a total of 2,271,955 doses have been administered in the province. Pharmacies and clinics across the province have now given 2.46 million doses. Hinshaw said Thursday that almost 51 per cent of all eligible people in the province have received their first dose.

Alberta's chief medical officer of health says the province in making changes to quarantine rules for people who have been vaccinated for COVID-19. Hinshaw said it's safe for children to return to school, citing a sharp decline in cases among school-aged children as numbers in the wider community started to drop.

"Enjoy the good weather, spend time outside with your immediate family and book a vaccination appointment".
