Boris Johnson pledges UK's "unequivocal support" to Jersey in fishing dispute

France threatens to cut electricity to British island in post-Brexit fisheries dispute

The French government on Monday lashed out at new regulations which Britain has declared for fishing in its waters near the Channel Islands, deeming them "null and void" in a deepening post-Brexit row.

At dawn, French trawlers could be seen massed in front of the Saint Helier port on Jersey, a self-governing territory that is dependent on Britain for defence.

Jersey receives 95% of its electricity from France through three undersea cables.

Johnson spoke to Jersey Chief Minister John Le Fondre on Wednesday, when the pair "stressed the urgent need for a de-escalation in tensions", according to a statement from Downing Street on Wednesday evening.

The UK government said "the situation is resolved for now" but "we remain on standby" to assist Jersey.

In recent weeks, Paris and London have increasingly clashed over fishing, which divided the parties during the Brexit talks, as French fishing firms say they are being prevented from operating in British waters because of difficulty obtaining licenses.

"The French fishermen out there want conditions removed from their licences so that they can fish with no constraints in our waters, whilst our boats are subject to all sorts of conditions", he told the Good Morning Britain TV show.

The Prime Minister reiterated his unequivocal support for Jersey and confirmed that the two Royal Navy Offshore Patrol Vessels would remain in place to monitor the situation as a precautionary measure.

Earlier this week, France's Minister of the Sea, Annick Girardin, threatened to cut the island's electricity supply from her country unless changes were made to the licensing regime for French fishing boats.

France threatens to cut electricity to British island in post-Brexit fisheries dispute

Dimitri Rogoff, president of the regional fishing committee of Normandy in northern France, said that if French fishermen continued to be blocked from the waters off Jersey, there should be reprisal measures.

French fishermen are threatening to blockade the port of Saint Helier, the capital of Jersey, Channel Islands.

According to Sky News, the French claim that the United Kingdom is using red tape to limit fishing off of the Jersey coast and that on Friday, 41 fishing boats were allowed to work in the region but were subjected to limits on the duration, locations, and what machinery could be used. The UK government is constitutionally responsible for the global relations of the crown dependencies. "I am optimistic that we can provide extra time to allow this evidence to be provided".

Jersey's government said France and the European Union had expressed their unhappiness with the conditions placed on the issuance of fishing licenses.

The French fisheries ministry said Britain had introduced "new technical measures" relating to licences for fishing off the Channel Islands which had not been properly declared to the European Union under the terms of the Brexit deal.

France said its two vessels were not on military missions and were told to stay in French waters and to be near the French fishermen to ensure safety. "We are not going to be able to do much", he said.

The UK and Jersey have hit out at France for making "disproportionate" threats after Paris warned it could cut off electricity to the island in a row over post-Brexit fishing rights.
