Canada recommends J&J vaccine for 30 years and over, probing first batch

Health Canada's pause on the J&J shot is a setback for the country's efforts to continue ramping up vaccinations amid a raging third wave of the pandemic.

Denmark said Monday it would not include the Covid-19 vaccine from U.S. drugmaker Johnson & Johnson in its national vaccination campaign, citing worries over serious side effects involving blood clots.

For reasons linked to extremely rare blood clotting issues, the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are only being given to patients aged over 55.

Both the EMA and the World Health Organization have however recommended the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on the basis that the benefits outweigh the risks. J&J said in a news release that it would comply with that measure.

Ultimately, federal health officials decided that Johnson & Johnson's one-and-done vaccine is critical to fighting the pandemic - and that the small clot risk could be handled with warnings to help younger women decide if they should use that shot or an alternative.

But it acknowledged that the decision would delay the vaccination campaign by four weeks.

It also marks the latest hurdle for the single-dose vaccine, which has been long-awaited in hard-hit regions as a way to quickly immunize vulnerable populations. Authorities had been evaluating it since mid-April.

The Danish Health Authority said on Monday it independently examined the matter, and that it will halt the plan to use Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

"New knowledge may emerge, or the situation in Denmark may change, for example, in terms of infection pressure, disease burden, epidemic control, or other vaccines' availability", the health authority said. In total, Denmark was scheduled to receive 8.2 million doses, which are now "down the toilet", CPHPost wrote.

"It is important that vaccination providers are aware that anxiety-related adverse events might be reported more frequently after receipt of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine than after influenza vaccination and observe all COVID-19 vaccine recipients for any adverse reactions for at least 15 minutes after vaccine administration", the CDC stated in their report.

AstraZeneca's jab is meanwhile being administered in 160 countries, Pfizer's in 80, and Moderna's in about 40 countries.
