Which six states gained Congressional seats; which seven lost seats?

The Census Bureau released this map of apportionment on Monday

The bureau released its population data Monday afternoon.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced the new population numbers Monday, confirming Oregon's political gain - which had been forecast for several years.

Texas gained two seats in Congress, which is one seat lower than what was expected by earlier Census estimates.

Texas will now have 38 congressional representatives- gaining more seats than any state- and 40 votes in the Electoral College.

The states with the most representatives are California (52), Texas, (38), Florida (28) and NY (26), which account for roughly one-third of total seats in the House.

On the other hand, seven states, including California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, were set to lose one seat in the chamber each.

When full-counts are conducted- state representatives in Washington, D.C. are added or subtracted based on actual population figures.

The UMass Donahue Institute, which runs the state data center, had estimated that Massachusetts' 2020 population was 6.89 million people, an increase of 5.3 percent from the 6,547,629 residents counted in 2010, according to Galvin's office.

Overall, the 2020 census numbers show the US population is 331,449,281, a 7.4% increase from 2010.

Census sweepstakes: Texas to gain 2 House seats while New York and California among the losers

Texas is the biggest victor in House seats because it gained about 4 million new residents over the decade. Overall, the state's population increased by 823,147 during the decade.

By contrast, the population rate shifts in Texas, Florida and OR each jumped by double-digits. The 10.6% jump in population, however, did not come with more congressional seats. States are expected to receive redistricting data by August 16, and the full redistricting data will be delivered by September 30.

Every state uses the census data to redraw lines both for districts and thousands of state legislative seats in a process known as redistricting.

Falling in the final years of the Donald Trump presidency, the once-in-a-decade survey was the subject of extensive litigation over claims that the Republican president tried to game political apportionment with illegal efforts to exclude non-citizens.

Joe Fain, a former state senator, and Paul Graves, who served in the state House of Representatives, are the GOP members. On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the state of OH that tried to get the U.S. Census Bureau to provide data used for drawing congressional and legislative districts ahead of its planned release.

The Minnesota Legislature is tasked with redrawing the political boundaries for seats in Congress and the statehouse, but disagreements and divided government have kicked that process to the courts for decades.

This story was updated to report that seven states, not 10, lost a U.S. House seat. Democrats hold the seats that cover Minneapolis, St. Paul and a number of their respective inner-ring suburbs; and two suburban-to-exurban districts in the south and west Twin Cities.

"I don't think it would be hard to create a gerrymander that would make that district a lot safer for Republicans", said Michael Li, senior counsel of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice. said.

Monday's release of census data comes four months late, following delays by the Census Bureau's household-by-household survey past year caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
