CDC Releases Summer Camp Guidance For In-Person Operations : Coronavirus Updates

Here's what you can do once you've been vaccinated

In guidance posted on Saturday, the CDC notes that vaccines are not yet authorized for children of all ages, so prevention measures such as mask-wearing and physical distancing must continue, even after camp employees are vaccinated.

Clinical trials for the three vaccines authorized in the USA - made by Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson - did not measure whether vaccinated people could still spread the virus, only whether they were protected against getting sick from it.

The CDC now recommends that fully vaccinated people still wear a mask and maintain 6 feet of distance when in public or gathering with people from more than one other household who have not received the vaccine, and when visiting with an unvaccinated person who is considered high risk of severe illness or who lives with a person at such risk. But as an increasing number of people in the USA are getting vaccinated against COVID-more than half of adults now have at least one shot-many of us are hoping we'll be able to go mask-free soon.

Everyone in camp facilities must wear well-fitting masks at all times, with exceptions for certain activities such as eating, drinking and swimming. Campers are advised to be at least three feet apart from others in their cohort and six feet apart while eating and drinking.

If activities are held indoors, "bring in as much fresh air into camp buildings as possible" by opening windows and using fans. The guidance recommends disposable masks or cloth masks with two or more layers of fabric, and says they should be stored properly and washed regularly. "If you choose to play close-contact or indoor sports, reduce your risk by getting vaccinated when a vaccine is available to you, wearing a mask, playing outside, staying at least 6 feet away from others, and avoiding crowds".

Fauci's latest comments on the risk of contracting COVID-19 outdoors appear to be another flip-flop.

It also suggests modifying a number of activities and traditions for safety's sake, such as avoiding group activities where distance can not be maintained, limiting nonessential visits from other individuals and organizations, and performing activities such as singing and chanting outdoors only.

It also outlines steps campers should take before their arrival, such as quarantining in line with travel guidance and getting either vaccinated or tested within a certain time frame.

Updated guidance for overnight camps also suggests staff, volunteers, campers and family members get vaccinated against Covid-19.
