Hospitals' dire 'SOS' Twitter plea as country breaks Covid record

Kangana Ranaut is touched after seeing Pakistan stand with India amid its Covid-19 crisis

Outside a Sikh temple in Ghaziabad city on the outskirts of Delhi the street resembled an emergency ward of a hospital, but cramed with cars carrying COVID-19 patients gasping for breath as they were hooked up to hand held oxygen tanks.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Friday said USA and Indian officials were working to find ways to help address the crisis, but gave no timetable for the support.

In the capital, New Delhi, one person is said to be dying of COVID-19 every four minutes.

"We direct all the suppliers to provide complete details of the oxygen that they supply in the NCT of Delhi of the hospitals to which they are supplied; the time at which they are supplied; and the quantities which they supply", the court ordered.

The pandemic has killed more than three million people worldwide since the initial outbreak in China in December 2019.

The Delhi Police on Saturday created a green corridor and helped Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in the eastern part of the national capital to get an oxygen tanker, officials said.

Fortis hospital in Shalimar Bagh took to Twitter saying that it is running out of oxygen.

"You can't leave me in the lurch", a lawyer appearing for the Jaipur Golden hospital told the high court on Saturday, seeking its intervention.

"We know how people react, let's not have a law and order situation", the court said in its direction to the authorities.

Canada eyes travel restrictions from India due to massive COVID surge

The United States said it was deeply concerned by the massive surge in coronavirus cases in India and was racing to send aid to India.

The number of new daily infections has been above 300,000 over the last several days.

The federal government had declared it had beaten back the coronavirus in February.

Britain began to gradually lift Covid-19 restrictions last month after months of curbs and a successful mass vaccination campaign.

"While complacency in adhering to masks and physical distancing might have played a role, it seems increasingly likely that this second wave has been fuelled by a much more virulent strain", wrote Vikram Patel, Professor of Global Health at Harvard Medical School, in the Indian Express.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the Defence Ministry would fly 23 mobile oxygen generating plants from Germany to help with the shortage.

The European Union as a whole said it would have enough vaccines to immunise 70 percent of its adult population by the end of July.

Others such as U.S. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi urged the Biden administration to release unused vaccines to India.
