Indonesian submarine declared sunk, no hope of survivors

Indonesian Navy hospital ship KRI Dr. Soeharso sails during a search for submarine KRI Nanggala that went missing while participating in a training exercise on Wednesday

"We know that the submarine is old, we know that the submarine has a depth rating of 250 meters - which means that it probably could survive to 400 500 meters", he said, adding that the vessel was in waters 700 meters deep. Gen. Achmad Riad, the head of the military's central information unit, said during a press conference on Friday.

They joined 24 Indonesian ships and a patrol plane that were mobilized for the search Friday, focusing on the area where an oil slick was found after the submarine disappeared.

"With the authentic evidence we found believed to be from the submarine, we have now moved from the sub miss phase to sub sunk", Mr Margono said.

The submarine was first declared missing on Thursday after the vessel submerged during training drills on Wednesday some 60 miles off the coast of Bali.

"A blackout means the vessel's equipment can not be moved", he said. Malaysian and Indian ships are also expected to arrive on Saturday.

According to Indonesian authorities, the KRI Nanggala-402, a German-made submarine, went missing during a military exercise around the Bali Strait on Wednesday.

The Indonesian navy has said the vessel might have sunk to a depth greater than 2,000 feet, which would certainly complicate the search further.

Australia, Malaysia, India, and Singapore have also sent ships or aircraft into the fray to aid the search for the missing submarine.

"The family is in a good condition and keeps praying", said Ratih Wardhani, the sister of 49-year-old crewman Wisnu Subiyantoro.

OH shooting: Columbus police shoot dead black teenage girl
The account had this to say when sharing: "A 15 year old girl JUST got shot 4 times in Columbus Ohio by this police officer". No further details were gathered from the caller who hung up the phone, according to The Columbus Dispatch .

The US is deploying a P-8 Poseidon aircraft on Saturday to assist.

"I hope that they will be found alive", said Berda Asmara, the wife of crew member Guntur Ari Prasetyo, 39, who has sailed on the Nanggala for 10 years.

The military has said the submarine, delivered to Indonesia in 1981, was seaworthy.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has ordered all-out efforts to locate the submarine and asked Indonesians to pray for the crew's safe return.

An object with "high magnetic force" had been spotted "floating" at a depth of 50-100 metres, Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Yudo Margono said, and an aerial search had earlier spotted an oil spill near the submarine's last location.

The cause of the sub's disappearance is still not certain.

The submarine, which disappeared as it prepared to conduct a torpedo drill, is created to withstand a depth of up to 500 metres (1,640 ft). The navy had previously said an electrical failure could have left the submarine unable t o execute emergency procedures to resurface. Even if the vessel is still intact, it's likely to be at a depth that's beyond the capability of most recovery missions.

The submarine - one of five in Indonesia's fleet - disappeared early Wednesday during live torpedo training exercises off the Indonesian holiday island. In November 2017, an Argentine submarine went missing with 44 crew members in the South Atlantic, nearly a year before its wreckage was found at a depth of 800 metres (2,625 feet).
