Matt Gaetz sought preemptive pardon in final weeks of Trump's presidency

Matt Gaetz begged Donald Trump for a 'blanket pardon' before he left office NYTimes

Also on Monday, Vanity Fair published an op-ed by Hill where she acknowledged that Gaetz was one of the few people who defended her after nude photos of her were leaked online, but said now he is "accused of doing just that" and should resign "immediately" if any of the allegations are true.

Gaetz, starting his fifth year in Congress, has been battling to preserve his political career since reports last week that he is under federal investigation for possible sex crimes.

She concluded, "The most likely scenario is that Matt Gaetz slept with a 17-year-old and sex trafficked her, and he is probably gonna go to jail".

Gaetz, who has not been charged with any crimes, denied the accusations Monday. "I'm actually not. What's particularly gross is he's the only congressman to vote against an anti-sex trafficking bill that was on the floor previous year".

After the initial allegations against Gaetz came out in The New York Times, he said that the DOJ investigation was part of a criminal extortion plot led by former Justice Department official David McGee.

Ontario reports 3,065 new cases of COVID-19
Since the pandemic began, the province has logged 367,602 COVID-19 infections, including 333,576 recoveries and 7,458 deaths. Locally, there are 955 new cases in Toronto, 561 in Peel, 320 in York Region, 165 in Ottawa and 132 in Niagara.

He also predicted, "I'm sure some partisan crooks in Merrick Garland's Justice Department want to pervert the truth and the law to go after me". The alleged extortion attempt came on March 16, about eight months after the Department of Justice reportedly began its investigation.

The Times reported Tuesday that it's unclear what Gaetz knew of the inquiry at the time of his request, and he didn't tell White House aides when he sought the pardons that he was under investigation. Gaetz and Trump Jr. added their voices to a growing effort to vote Cheney out of office after she voted in favor of impeaching Donald Trump.

Nelson said he was questioned about whether or not he knew of Gaetz's activity after members of the media tipped off the Federal Bureau of Investigation that Nelson may have resigned because he knew about illegal activities.

Nelson provided no specific details about the FBI's questioning.

Gaetz calls the sexual misconduct accusations against him "lies" with "exactly zero credible (or even non-credible) accusers willing to come forward by name and state on the public record that I behaved improperly toward them, in the manner by which Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ten accusers". The private law firm where McGee works said in a public statement that Gaetz's allegations were false and defamatory. "Neither I nor any other member of Congressman Gaetz's staff had any knowledge of illegal activities", Nelson said at his home in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
