U.S. Capitol on lockdown after security incident

She says the suspect then exited the vehicle with a knife and lunged at the officers.

An officer has died after a man rammed a auto into a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol and then emerged wielding a knife Friday.

Officials declined to offer a motive, but Robert Contee, the acting chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, said there was no ongoing threat to the area and that the incident did not appear to be linked to terrorism.

While the incident remains under investigation, some have alleged that Trump and supporters encouraged the attack and that Trump officials held back on deploying additional law enforcement and troops to fight back the attackers.

The lockdown order on the Capitol was lifted just after 15:00 local time.

The vehicle hit a barricade just outside the Senate, on a street that had recently been reopened after the January 6 insurrection. One of the officers who was injured was taken by police vehicle to the hospital; the other was transported by emergency medical crews.

But the danger on Friday was limited as Congress was in recess for the Easter holiday and relatively few people were in the building. The driver stabbed one of the officers, Pittman said.

Canada`s Ontario returns to lockdown to slow coronavirus, report says
The province has reported 2,000 new cases daily for a week, double the daily infections seen in the beginning of March. The letter says doctors are seeing younger patients on ventilators and many are parents of school-aged children.

According to WTTG, there were reports of gunfire, but the Capitol Police did not say if the suspect or the officers opened fire during the incident.

Earlier, a message played over the loudspeakers inside the Capitol said that all buildings were being locked down "due to an external security threat" and staff members were told they could not enter or exit the buildings.

The security checkpoint is typically used by senators and staff on weekdays. The suspect was shot and died at the hospital.

Five people died in the January 6 riot, including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who was among a badly outnumbered force trying to fight off insurrectionists seeking to overturn the election.

In recent weeks some security has been loosened, with the number of armed National Guard troops at the Capitol reduced and a security fence that created a broad perimeter around the Capitol complex removed. And if they were outside, they were told to "seek cover".

US President Joe Biden is also not in DC at the moment.
