Dutch stop giving AstraZeneca vaccine to under-60s pending review

Green light for AstraZeneca vaccine supplied through Covax

The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said on Thursday that the risk associated with this type of blood clot is "very small" and that the public should continue to take up the vaccine when offered it.

It previously declared the AstraZeneca vaccine safe, just as the World Health Organization did.

Earlier this week, the European Union drugs regulator said a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and a rare type of blood clot is possible, identifying at least 62 cases of the condition.

There were no reports of similar cases after receiving the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

"No cases of central venous sinus thrombosis have been reported in Australia to date, in the time period of concern following vaccination, which is within four to 20 days. This particular one is very rare", she said on Today.

Australia's Deputy Chief Medical Officer says it is "likely" there is a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and a Melbourne man being hospitalised with blood clots.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) COVID-19 Working Group are meeting on Friday evening to discuss further advice on the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The man received his vaccine dose on March 22.

"We are taking this very seriously", Professor Kidd said on Friday afternoon.

The most concerning symptom would be severe anaphylaxis, which is why people are monitored for about 15 minutes after receiving the vaccination - and longer if they have a past history of serious allergic reactions to vaccines.

Lareb said the events had occurred 7 to 10 days after vaccination.

A causal link with the AstraZeneca vaccine is yet to be established.

The European Medicines Agency said its safety committee will probably issue an updated recommendation next week.

In a statement, the government said there had been five reports of thrombosis and abnormally low platelets, which help blood clot, in women aged 25 to 65 (around 400,000 AstraZeneca injections have been given in the Netherlands, according to the same government statement). In late March, CSL Ltd. began domestic production of 50 million doses.

"That's still up in the air", said Fauci when asked whether the USA will use the AstraZeneca vaccine doses.
