Car Rams US Capitol Barricade; One Officer and Driver Dead

US Capitol: Two officers injured and building locked down

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered the flags at the US Capitol to be flown at half-staff on Friday in honor of a US Capitol Police officer who died after a suspect rammed a vehicle into a police barricade outside the Capitol building Friday afternoon. One of the officers who was injured was taken by police vehicle to the hospital; the other was being transported by emergency medical crews, the officials said.

Capitol Police say that someone "rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers" and that a suspect was taken into custody.

"Police are going to act with the phrase that we've become so used to with "an abundance of caution", to make sure that the threat is over for the time being, and that they are fully in control of the situation at the Capitol Hill complex before they make any further statement", Fisher said. It comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win. Both of the Capitol Police officers received emergency medical attention.

The U.S. Capitol complex was placed on lockdown for a time after Friday's shooting, and staffers were told they could not enter or exit buildings.

It doesn't appear the driver was known to Capitol or Metro Police, officials said.

But Congress is now in recess, meaning the majority of politicians are not at the Capitol complex today.

U.S. Capitol on lockdown after security incident
The vehicle hit a barricade just outside the Senate, on a street that had recently been reopened after the January 6 insurrection. She says the suspect then exited the vehicle with a knife and lunged at the officers.

However, thousands of troops have remained around the Capitol building to guard against further attacks the Federal Bureau of Investigation had warned of.

Tensions in Washington have remained high in the wake of the deadly January 6 riot at the Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. "This has been an extremely hard time for U.S. after Jan 6 riots", the Capitol Police said.

Other footage showed National Guard troops marching toward the Capitol. Large sections of fencing that secluded much of the surrounding area for months have only begun to come down in recent weeks.

Police identified the slain officer as William "Billy" Evans, an 18-year veteran who was a member of the department's first responders unit.

That's according to two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on Friday.

The D.C. National Guard also deployed an Immediate Response Force made up of members of the National Guard to the Capitol complex to support the Capitol Police.
