Gaetz: 'Sexual Conduct' Probe Is Based on False Allegations

WASHINGTON DC- OCTOBER 30 U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz speaks to the media outside of the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility during the continued House impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump at the U.S. Capitol on October 30

Numerous laws deem it sex trafficking to solicit a minor across state lines in exchange for money.

The three NYT sources also said that the investigation is part of a broader investigation into a political ally, a local official in Florida named Joel Greenberg, who was indicted previous year on charges including sex trafficking of a child and financially supporting people in exchange for sex, at least one of whom was an underage girl.

The report goes on to say that the investigation began when Trump was still in office and William Barr was still the attorney general. Carlson said in response, "I don't remember the woman you're speaking of or the context at all, honestly". "I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward", Gaetz said in a statement.

No charges have been brought against Gaetz at this time. Last year, Florida state Rep. Chris Latvala accused the congressman of designing a "game" with a point system for "sleeping with aides, interns, lobbyists, and married legislators".

Gaetz, who represents parts of western Florida, told Axios that his lawyers were informed that he was the subject of an investigation "regarding sexual conduct with women" but that he was not a target of the probe.

"I have definitely, in my single days, provided for women I've dated", he told Axios.

Given Gaetz's national profile, senior Justice Department officials in Washington - including some appointed by Trump - were notified of the investigation, the people said. "I think someone is trying to make that look criminal when it is not". I've been, you know, generous as a partner.

A frequent presence on Fox News and other conservative media, Gaetz has recently mused with confidants about quitting elected politics and taking a full-time job with the conservative television channel Newsmax or another network, according to a person familiar with the conversations.

Greenberg is a former local official.

Gaetz told Newsy that he is being extorted by a "former DOJ official" for $25 million.

Greenberg, who pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go to trial in June, did not return a message seeking comment left at what appeared to be phone listed to him in public records. "No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation". Gaetz asserted that his family had been cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and that his father had even worn a wire. I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations."During his appearance on Carlson's primetime show, Gaetz continued to profess his innocence, saying the allegations about the teenager are "verifiably false" while reiterating his previous claims that the whole situation stems from an extortion plot".
