UK PM to call European Union leaders over vax export ban

‘We Have the Option of Banning Planned Export’: EU Chief Warns AstraZeneca Amid Vaccine Spat

The long-awaited results of the final clinical trial phase in the USA of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine have confirmed that the shot is safe and effective. The rest of the test volunteers were injected with a placebo. The results were announced Monday.

AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine showed 79% efficacy against symptomatic disease and 100% efficacy against severe disease and hospitalization in a new, US-based clinical trial, the company said Monday. Some countries had not even started administering AstraZeneca's vaccine citing lack of evidence of efficiency in adults over 65 years old.

The London-listed company said the panel found "no increased risk of thrombosis or events characterised by thrombosis among the 21,583 participants receiving at least one dose of the vaccine".

Vials labelled "Astra Zeneca Covid-19 Coronavirus Vaccine" and a syringe are seen in front of a displayed AstraZeneca logo, in this illustration photo taken March 14, 2021. It said the data would also soon be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

"What he said and what he made clear to us was that he was waiting until the end of May to establish that they would have a sufficiency of supply for the entire American population before they would discuss the sharing of vaccines".

"These findings re-confirm previous results observed in. trials across all adult populations, but it's exciting to see similar efficacy results in people over 65 for the first time", said Ann Falsey, a professor at the University of Rochester medical school in upstate NY and one of the principal investigators for the trial.

On Saturday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen threatened to halt exports of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccines if the bloc did not receive its promised deliveries first, escalating a row that has fanned global tensions.

China calls for end of Cold War mentality in U.S. relations
Zhao also doubled down on Beijing's position on sovereignty and issues concerning the country's core interests. Trump had taken pride in forging what he saw as a strong relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

AstraZeneca said it was preparing to submit the data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and for a launch in the United States should it win Emergency Use Authorization. It's got good results.

Also appearing on the BBC's Andrew Marr programme yesterday, Ireland's EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness refused to be drawn on any potential vaccine export ban but said that von der Leyen has said that everything is on the table.

"This analysis validates the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine as a much-needed additional vaccination option, offering confidence that adults of all ages can benefit from protection against the virus".

More than a dozen countries, mostly in Europe, temporarily suspended the vaccine's use after reports it was linked to blood clots.

Meanwhile, it is recommended that South Korea continue to use the AstraZeneca vaccine, just as the World Health Organization, European Medicines Agency, and UK Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency have.

European Union leaders are due to meet on Thursday to discuss a Brussels' threat to ban exports of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Britain and, according to the BBC and Daily Mail, the deliveries in question are made at the Halix plant in Leiden.

Irish officials are calling for a more cautious approach to cutting off exports to the United Kingdom, alongside countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium, however, France, Germany and Italy are broadly support tighter export curbs on those who do not reciprocate.
