Manchin opposes confirming OMB nominee Tanden

Chairman Sen. Bernie Sanders I-Vt. speaks as Neera Tanden President Joe Biden's nominee for Director of the Office of Management and Budget, testifies during a Senate Committee on the Budget hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington Wednesday

Manchin said that his determination was after a review of Tanden's tweets, which he said "were so personally directed toward my colleagues on both sides of the aisle".

In a statement, Manchin said that Tanden's "overtly partisan statements will have a toxic and detrimental impact on the important working relationship between members of Congress and the next director of the Office of Management & Budget".

The West Virginia Democrat, a moderate known for his conservative leanings, has emerged as one of the most influential lawmakers in Washington, DC, under the new administration and is poised to continue to have major sway over Biden's legislative priorities.

Tanden, who is Biden's nominee for OMB director, is now unlikely to be confirmed. "And I really regret it and I recognize that it's really important for me to demonstrate that I can work with others", she said.

As such, the vote of Mr. Manchin gains significance, given that a majority of the Republicans are likely to oppose the nomination of Ms. Tanden. Manchin has sided against the majority of his party on many occasions.

The White House issued a statement on Friday night that reiterated its continued support of Tanden. "He'ss making her famous in WV so they will know he is putting a woman of color in her place, after another women of color - our Vice President - stepped out of what he thinks is 'her place'in WV recently", said Cheri Jacobus, a NeverTrump activist.

Despite Mr. Manchin's opposition, Mr. Biden said he will not pull the nomination.

The Senate Budget Committee is set to vote on Tanden's nomination next week in advance of a full floor vote. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Tanden apologized for the tweets during separate Senate confirmation hearings this month, and she also promised a different approach if confirmed.
