New York Legislature should probe nursing home deaths, Cuomo cover-up

Gov. Andrew Cuomo spoke during his daily news conference amid the coronavirus outbreak on March 20, 2020 in New York City. There should be hell to pay.

Cuomo said that the the New York State Department of Health has always fully and publicly reported all COVID deaths in nursing homes and hospitals, saying that they have always been fully reported.

DeRosa says they were anxious it would be used against them in a federal investigation. "We know the virus can't be mandated within state boundaries or county boundaries".

Next, in reply to a Freedom of Information request from the Associated Press in May, the state Health Department released records this week showing that more than 9,000 recovering coronavirus patients in NY were released from hospitals into nursing homes in the pandemic's early months - over 40% higher than the state had said previously, because it wasn't counting residents who returned from hospitals to homes where they already had lived.

"The other thing was that [the Cuomo administration] was not following CMS [Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] guidance", she said.

This came amid growing calls for his resignation after one of his top aides admitted his administration willingly covered up data of nursing home deaths.

Biden Press Aide Suspended Over Threat

The governor said that of 613 NY nursing homes, 365 received a person from a hospital.

"Everyone knows Gov. Cuomo is a bully", she said. "They're all made on the best information the medical professionals had at the time".

"The void we created by not providing information was filled with skepticism, and cynicism, and conspiracy theories which furthered the confusion", Cuomo said. In my opinion, yes, and I think that's what created the void.

"If there's nothing to hide, why didn't they hand over the information when we asked for it?"

For this, Cuomo said, there were "no excuses" and he took responsibility for it, noting that he is "in charge".

Governor Cuomo's failure to apologize this afternoon was a shocking slap in the face to the New Yorkers who have lost loved ones to COVID-19. And state assembly should issue subpoenas immediately, and I want the Department of Justice to launch an independent investigation. He continues to shift the blame anywhere but upon himself and his top officials. The truth is it was in the middle of a awful pandemic.
