Trump clears second impeachment trial, vows to fight on

Supporters of then President Donald Trump occupy the west front of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday

Donald Trump denounced his second impeachment trial.

While a two-thirds majority was needed in the 100-member US Senate to convict Trump on charges of inciting violence in the US Capitol Hill on 6 February, only 57 Senators voted in favour of holding Trump guilty, while 43 voted "not guilty".

Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Richard Burr of North Carolina were openly criticised by party officials at home following the impeachment verdict.

Utah GOP Chairman Derek Brown says he's aware of the censure motion but has not seen it yet.

While there were no apparent plans by the Alaska GOP to censure Murkowski, her vote in this month's proceedings risks costing the senator reelection in 2022.

Democrats and their Republican supporters, however, said that although he was no longer the president, he could still be impeached and face the penalty of being barred from running for office.

The North Carolina Republican Party is expected to vote Monday on whether to censure Sen.

Donald Trump 'ready to move on and rebuild the Republican party' after impeachment acquittal

Many of the Republicans who voted to convict Mr Trump issued statements or took to social media to justify their decision, with Senator Toomey saying "his betrayal of the constitution and his oath of office required conviction".

Burr said in a statement on Saturday that Trump "bears responsibility" for the insurrection, adding that the former President "used his office to first inflame the situation instead of immediately calling for an end to the assault".

"The evidence is compelling that President Trump is guilty of inciting an insurrection against a coequal branch of government and that the charge rises to the level of high Crimes and Misdemeanors", Burr stated Saturday. "Therefore, I have voted to convict", he continued.

"I said, "Mr president, this MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement needs to continue".

"I would have liked to have had him on the impeachment managers' team based on the way he presented that, except then he went back to the completely counterfeit argument that the Senate could not conduct the trial", Raskin said.

"We have acted decisively to send a very strong message to Senator Toomey that he works for us and what he is doing is not in the interest of his constituents or our Party", Ball wrote, announcing the censure a day before Toomey cast his vote to convict Trump.

She survived it, but Mr Trump has vowed to throw his support behind a primary challenger to her.
