Pharmacies ready to help administer COVID-19 vaccines across Canada, association says

The two-dose Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been hailed as a 'vaccine for the world' because it is cheaper and easier to distribute than some rivals

"Every jab in the arm is another step closer to returning to normality in the future and that's why we're now inviting the next priority group to book their appointments", Vaccine Minister Nadhim Zahawi said in a statement.

Hanna said it makes sense for local pharmacies to administer COVID-19 vaccines because they already administer flu shots, there are 11,000 pharmacies across the country, 90 per cent of them are routinely administering vaccines, and 95 per cent of Canadians live within a five kilometre radius of a pharmacy.

Oxford University is extending its COVID-19 vaccine study to include children - some as young as 6.

"It is important to establish the safety and immune response to the vaccine in children and young people as some children may benefit from vaccination", said Andrew Pollard, chief researcher on the Oxford vaccine trial.

It is one of three to have been approved for use in adults in the United Kingdom, along with those from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna.

The move marks a landmark development in COVID-19 research that could see results for brand new treatments in months rather than years, and will enable the government to get even more safe and effective treatments to the NHS rapidly through a more streamlined process.
