After Saturday’s ice, more winter storms line up for D.C. area

Ice covering trees throughout the night is causing them to fall and break under the weight

SUNDAY NIGHT: Off-and-on freezing rain will continue overnight Sunday into early Monday, which will lead to slick spots on roadways.

Freezing rain left roads, power lines and trees coated in ice in the Portland, Oregon, region, and by Saturday morning more than 270,000 people were without power.

The National Weather Service tightened up its forecast for the winter storm that's expected to impact the Finger Lakes and most of Upstate New York between Monday and Tuesday evening. Wind chills ("feels like temperatures") could fall close to or below zero degrees.

The winter storm making its way into the region Sunday has put parts of southern Texas under winter storm watches for the "first time in a decade", the prediction center said.

Gov. Greg Abbott said Saturday that Texas "is facing a very unsafe winter storm" over the coming days that will "make movement virtually impossible".

Forecasters say travel could be "very difficult" and could affect morning or evening commutes during that time.

Brian Zevenbergen watched Saturday as a crew sawed up two large, ice-covered trees that had crashed across his driveway overnight, narrowly missing two cars parked there. However, later tonight the temperature will drop below 32 degrees Farenheight, and there will be a threat of frozen precipitation.

TUESDAY: Temperatures will remain below freezing on Tuesday so any ice that accumulates will still be causing problems. There's a chance that as temperatures trend colder Monday afternoon that the freezing rain can change over to sleet and some snow on top of the ice for Marion, Winston, Cullman, Walker, Fayette, Pickens, Lamar, and Tuscaloosa counties.

The forecast for Mardi Gras does include a hard freeze warning and a wind chill advisory so maybe it's a good thing the coronavirus shut our parades down already. We will likely stay below freezing all day Tuesday.

The wintry mix looks to last through Monday morning before we get a brief break by mid-morning Monday.

You should make your final preparations this morning!

FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil said on Saturday that while accumulation was uncertain with Tuesday's event, the region would likely see a general accumulation of 2-4 inches on Monday.
