A top Cuomo aide admitted to leading state Democratic lawmakers that the administration had withheld data on coronavirus deaths at nursing homes to avoid federal scrutiny, the New York Post first reported just days ago.

The powers, which were initially set to expire on April 30, provide Cuomo the ability to "suspend specific provisions of any statute, local law, ordinance, or orders, rules or regulations of any agency" and circumvent normal legislative procedures.

NY state was one of the hotspots of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the USA, having registered over 8700 new COVID cases as of 12 February.
