The Northwest could see a year's worth of snow this weekend

Portland snow

The NWS said two winter storms moving through the area Monday into Tuesday and Thursday into Friday could bring significant snow and ice accumulation.

In a forecast discussion, the weather service says the "general consensus is for snow and sleet to initially overtake the region before a transition to sleet and freezing rain across the Lehigh Valley, I-95 Corridor, and Coastal Plain".

There could be a little snow thrown in there as well, for some. A good chunk of Sunday will be dry with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Freezing rain is liquid rain that turns to ice on trees, power lines, and untreated surfaces.

Freezing rain is increasing across the area, and will turn steadier this morning into this afternoon.

Those cities experienced the first round of the storm Thursday into Friday morning, with Portland getting 1 inch of snow. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

The heaviest ice accumulations are expected to be west and south of downtown Portland, with the heaviest snowfall to the east and north.

The winter storm continues Saturday with chances of snow before about 4 p.m.

Weather service models are not in full agreement how much of the precipitation will fall as rain, freezing rain or snow and in what locations.

As much as 2 to 3 feet of snow is forecast to accumulate there by Valentine's Day, making for tricky travel conditions for anyone who plans to drive across the mountain passes in the region.

A chance of snow and freezing rain is possible until 8 a.m. Sunday, forecasters said. The gorge could see up to 9 inches of new snow from Friday night through Saturday. But temperatures are expected to moderate through the day, with a high of near 36 likely. Forecasts call for rain and a high of 44.
