Acknowledging that the USA is in "serious competition" with China, the Biden administration has asserted that it will counter Beijing's "aggressive and coercive" actions, sustain its key military advantages and restore America's vital security partnerships. "By doing that, we're ceding authority, we're allowing China to continue to grow as a threat rather than confronting it".

He added that USA military repeatedly flaunted their force by dispatching warships to the waterway, sending wrong signals to the "Taiwan independence forces". Yang said normal exchanges between China and the USA needed to be restored at all levels, including through the reversal of Trump-era policies such as the labelling of Chinese media outlets in the U.S. as foreign missions and the closure of Confucius Institutes at United States universities.
State Department Spokesperson Ned Price on Tuesday commented on a speech by Yang Jiechi, who oversees China's diplomacy as a member of the Communist Party's Political Bureau.
"We in China hope that the United States will rise above the outdated mentality of zero-sum, major-power rivalry and work with China to keep the relationship on the right track", he declared. "So we will counter China's aggressive and coercive actions, sustain our key military advantages, defend democratic values, invest in advanced technologies, and restore our vital security partnerships", Price said.
At the time, Price described US-China relations as one viewed "through the lens of competition and positioning ourselves to compete and ultimately to out-compete with the Chinese".
For its part, China has called on the Biden administration to come to the negotiating table and remedy the "strategic misjudgment" of the previous administration's policies. Although plans are still in the early stages, the new administration appears as though it will likely uphold Trump-era tactics against China.
The United States Navy sent a guided-missile destroyer through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, the first time a USA warship has gone through the waterway that separates China and Taiwan during the Biden administration.
Wang Wenbin from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a Thursday press briefing that Beijing has been closely monitoring the USA warship's activities.
"So, as a first step we want to make sure that we are in lockstep with those allies, in lockstep with those partners, and then. you can expect that there will be engagement in several areas with China", he said.
