A hotel quarantine worker has tested positive for COVID-19 in Melbourne, forcing Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews to intensify coronavirus restrictions late Wednesday night.
"We're absolutely confident the Australian Open will go ahead", he said.
The Australian Open is scheduled to begin next Monday and Victoria state Premier Dan Andrews said he thought the positive test ― the first locally-acquired case in the state for nearly a month ― was not a threat to the tournament.
Daniel Andrews, premier of Victoria state, said the man infected last worked at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne on January 29 and anyone there was considered a casual contact.
Thursday's matches at Open tune-up events at Melbourne Park were postponed and are now set to be rescheduled for Friday.
"They must immediately isolate and get tested".
Tiley said he expected those tournaments to resume on Friday and finish Sunday.
It could also test the resolve of players who have recently come out of a two-week quarantine and give ammunition to critics of the decision to allow people to fly in from all over the world for the Australian Open.
"But out of an abundance of caution we want to ensure we leave no stone unturned in how we follow up and deal with anybody who may have had contact with this individual", he said.
New Coronavirus Mutation Evades Antibody Protection, Could Be Resistant To COVID Vaccine
Protocols like hand-washing, social and physical distancing and wearing a face mask will still help in avoiding infections. A silver lining may be that the variants are mutating in a similar way rather than diverging from each other.
Andrews on Thursday confirmed close family contacts of the infected worker had tested negative for COVID-19 and contact tracing was advanced.
Earlier on Thursday, Victoria's Deputy Chief Health Officer, Professor Allen Cheng, said the risk to players and their support staff was low.
More than 1,000 players, coaches and officials jetted into largely virus-free Australia last month.
Premier Daniel Andrews said authorities were "assuming the worst" and acting as though the man had the highly infectious United Kingdom strain of the virus.
Players, including Serena Williams, have been wearing masks in Australia.
"He had been working as a resident support officer as part of the Australian Open quarantine programme".
The Australian Grand Prix, the traditional season opener of the Formula One championship, was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic last March a few hours before the cars were due to take to the track at Melbourne's Albert Park.
Victorians now face renewed restrictions on social gatherings and workplace attendance after the state announced its first case of coronavirus community transmission in 28 days on Wednesday. "There's no need for people to be alarmed". Most of those were during a second deadly wave past year when a hard lockdown and overnight curfews were put in place in Melbourne.
