South African variant found in Birmingham

Experts had raised concerns about undue haste and a lack of transparency with the Sputnik V vaccine

E484K, which is now in place in the variants that arose in South Africa and Brazil, is believed to help the coronavirus resist vaccines and antibody therapies as well as infect those who have already fought off COVID-19. The company has yet to test its vaccine against real-world COVID-19 variants.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said that it is vital "that we do all we can to stop transmission of this variant". "It's a variant that transmits faster, so this is a worrying development". "The mutation of most concern, which we call E484K, has also occurred spontaneously in the new Kent strain in parts of the country too", said Calum Semple, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, on BBC radio, referring to the southern English county where the United Kingdom variant was first detected.

Britain's government announced in December that the country had to introduce tougher restrictions to control the rapid spread of the Kent variant, which first was discovered a few months earlier in southeast England.

The new strain was registered in South Africa in October 2020.

The South African variant, one of thousands since Covid-19 emerged, is not thought to be any more risky than others circulating in the UK.

"The mutation is actually "of most concern", Calum Semple, a member of the British Government's Science Advisory Committee on Emergencies (SAGE), said in a statement".

Coronavirus 'mutations of concern' found in Bristol and Liverpool

It's not the only variant causing concern.

"Of particular concern.is the emergence of the E484K mutation (found in the South African variant), which so far has only been seen in a relatively small number of individuals", Ravi Gupta, a professor at Cambridge University's Institute of Therapeutic Immunology & Infectious Disease and co-lead of the study, said.

Dr. Tang also said, enabling spread of the virus could also enable a "melting pot" for various different variants that emerge.

The discovery that the variant from South Africa is spreading in the community has led to calls to shut the U.K.'s borders to all global travelers or to require a 14-day hotel quarantine for everyone entering the country. Hayward told Sky News.

It's no longer unexpected that the COVID-19 strains are taking place, or they will continue changing. "So we need some sort of sustainable strategy, and I think that's very hard for politicians to think about that".
