NationNews Barbados: Girl discovers dinosaur footprint in Wales

The well-preserved footprint could help establish how dinosaurs walked

A dinosaur footprint found by four-year-old girl on a Welsh beach has been hailed as the "finest found in a decade" by experts.

"It would have been a slender animal with a tail, approximately 29.5 inches tall and 8-feet long, that walked on its two hind feet and actively hunted other small animals and insects."
.

It was around 66 million years back that a giant asteroid hit the earth, and resulted in the extinction of dinosaurs.

This fossilised dinosaur footprint from 220 million years ago is one of the best-preserved examples from anywhere in the United Kingdom and will really aid palaeontologists to get a better idea about how these early dinosaurs walked. The family was on their way to the supermarket when Wilder saw the footprint imprinted on a rock.

"It was on a low rock, shoulder height for Lily, and she just spotted it and said, 'look Daddy, '" her mother Sally Wilder, 41, told NBC News by telephone on Saturday.

"That will be exciting, and she'll take all the school friends with her", Wilder said.

At first, the family thought the print, which is just over 10 cm (4 inches) long, was scratched out on the rock by an artist. I found this fossil identification page on Facebook and I posted it on there and people went a bit insane. But it was Lily's grandmother who understood the importance of the discovery and encouraged the family to contact local experts, as well as fossil enthusiasts for further investigation.

Tennis chaos as players, officials isolate after Australia Covid-19 case
More than 1,000 players, coaches and officials jetted into largely virus-free Australia last month. Tiley said he expected those tournaments to resume on Friday and finish Sunday.

The specimen footprint is known as a "grallator", and could help scientists establish more about how dinosaurs walked.

"This discovery is unique and worth protecting - we will be studying the footprint and it will teach us a lot more about dinosaur feet and their bone and muscle structure".

"It's so flawless and absolutely pristine".

Sally said: "We were thrilled to find out it really was a dinosaur footprint and I am happy that it will be taken to the national museum where we can be enjoyed and studied for generations". This is how important it is.

Paleontologists have found ancient footprints in the same area in the past, but those were all left by crocodile-like creatures that once lived there.

"She is really excited but doesn't quite grasp how awesome it is", Sally, an engineer, said.

The footprint was removed from the bay after the National Museum Cardiff got approval from Natural Resources Wales to do so.

Now the preschooler carries a toy Tyrannosaurus rex everywhere she goes as she waits for the moment she can see her discovery in a museum, alongside a plaque with her name on it.
