Funeral for Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick

Capitol Riot Bill Sicknick

Capitol Police officers came together Tuesday night and walked his remains into the Capitol building, weeks after the violent riots Sicknick and many other officers responded to.

Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died from injuries sustained during the January 6 riot at the Capitol Building, returned Tuesday evening to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, along with their spouses, paid their respects during two days of visitation Tuesday and Wednesday, as did members of Congress and his fellow law enforcement officers.

Earlier in the evening, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and other members of congressional leadership held a ceremonial arrival for Sicknick's casket from the East Center Steps of the Capitol to the Rotunda. "His sacrifice reminds us every day of our obligation to our country and to the people we serve".

Mr Sicknick, 42, of South River, New Jersey, enlisted in the National Guard six months after graduating from high school in 1997, then deployed to Saudi Arabia and later Kyrgyzstan.

The Singing Sergeants, the official United States Air Force Chorus, performed a soaring rendition of "America the Beautiful" at the ceremony.

He said Sicknick was the "quiet rock" of his unit who was "caught at the wrong place at the wrong time, on a day when peace was shattered". "We knew that militia groups and white supremacists organizations would be attending", Pittman said, "We also knew that some of these participants were intending to bring firearms and other weapons to the event". "May this ceremony and the knowledge that so many mourn with and pray for them be a comfort to Officer Sicknick's family during this sad time".

" 'Blessed are the peacekeepers, ' like Brian", said Schumer, quoting Matthew 5:9. Later that day, Sicknick will depart the Capitol ahead of an interment at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Sicknick family has thanked the congressional leaders and expressed appreciation "to the millions of people who have offered their support and sympathies during this hard time". Two Capitol Police officers who were killed in 1998 when a gunman entered the building and opened fire were given similar recognition.

A spokeswoman for the US Capitol Police declined to comment for this story citing the ongoing investigation. They added that the tribute at the Capitol is an "historic honor on our fallen American hero".

They slowly approached the urn as Capitol police stood at attention, then stood with their hands over their hearts for a moment, and Biden reached out to touch the urn. Capitol Police were still. He is just the fifth member of the force to die in the line of duty, according to Capitol Police.

The attack led to uncertainty, fear and political turmoil in Congress as Biden began his presidency. He sustained injuries and died the next day.

Authorities have reviewed video and photographs that show Sicknick engaging with rioters amid the siege but have yet to identify a moment in which he suffered his fatal injuries, law enforcement officials familiar with the matter said.
