After Rihanna, Jay Sean extends support to farmers' protest

The pushback came from the external affairs ministry that issued a lengthy political statement complete with two hashtags — “IndiaTogether” and “IndiaAgainstPropaganda” — that were promptly amplified by not only Union ministers but also movie

Actor Suniel Shetty too tweeted in support of the initiative. "Don't fall for any false propaganda against India or Indian policies".

Claiming that some of the vested interest groups have tried to mobilise worldwide support against India, the MEA sent out a message to the like of celebrities like Rihanna that before rushing to comment on such matter, they should "ascertain the facts, and have a proper understanding of issues at hand". Mangeshkar also posted with the two hashtags.

Late on Tuesday night Rihanna tweeted to her 100 million followers: "Why aren't we talking about this #FarmersProtest?" while sharing a CNN article on the farmers' protest.

Her tweet went viral in no time.

The Internet ban that has been in place across Haryana since the weekend was on Wednesday lifted in all but five districts. "We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India", she wrote.

Soon netizens began to give grief to Indian celebrities for choosing to speak on the farmers' protest only to bail the government out from worldwide embarrassment.

This document was subsequently deleted.

Adding to their voices were American actor Amanda Cerni, US Vice President Kamala Harris' niece Meena Harris, "Serendipity" star Cusack, who retweeted a post by Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate reading, "Let us talk about what is happening in India right now #FarmersProtest", and former adult star Mia Khalifa who asked, "What in the human rights violations is going on?!"

Anger after US police pepper-spray 9-year-old girl
Neither of the officers' names has been released. "The NYPD shouldn't treat anyone like this, least of all a nine-year-old girl". In a statement Saturday, the police department said this action "required" an officer to take the girl down to the ground.

The external affairs ministry's statement raised eyebrows on multiple counts.

It's worth noting, that Rihanna was one of many celebrity figures to draw attention to the protest.

After telling Canada a year ago that Trudeau's comments could jeopardise relations, the ministry had maintained a studied silence on other remarks on the protest, letting its missions do the fire-fighting.

The ongoing farmers protest in India has now become one of the most debated topics on social media after a plethora of notable personalities from around the world expressed concerns over the plight of the farmers who have been sitting on the streets against the government and the newly passed farm laws.

We have so far talked about "bill wapsi" (repealing the farm laws).

The statement also mentioned how the Indian police forces have "handled these protests with utmost restraint" even as "hundreds of men and women serving in the police have been physically attacked" and in "some cases stabbed and seriously wounded".

The relentless onslaught of tweets using Rihanna's trauma against her reconfirms much of what we already know about ideological IT cell social media tactics - that they often, willingly, and gleefully aim to traumatize people who speak up on behalf of social movements the government is trying to suppress.

National governments have largely stayed out of the affair, however global protests have been organized and celebrities have been chiming in.
