Archaeologists Discover A Mysterious 2000-Year-Old Mummy With A Golden Tongue

According to General Khalid Abo El Humd, director of the Archaeological Commission of Alexandria, the archeological work of Taposiris Magna discovered the final mask of a woman, eight gold leaves and eight marble masks that were part of a golden crown.

As the Egyptian ministry of antiquities reportedly explained, the golden tongue was probably placed by embalmers into the mummy's mouth to allow the person to speak in the afterlife; it wasn't immediately clear, however, whether that person had some kind of speech impediment in life, or why the tongue was made out of gold specifically. A total of 16 burials has been unearthed in rock-cut tombs along with the mummy bearing a tongue made of gold.

As stated earlier, the tongue was gilded to enable the deceased to talk in the afterlife. This has led the researchers to believe the temples must have been in use during the famous queen's reign.

"I believe now that Cleopatra was buried in her tomb that she built next to her palace and it is under the water", Hawass told Live Science. Another theory suggested they must have been there during the Roman Empire.

Her headdress makes her appear as if she is smiling. The plastered layers, or cartonnage, encasing one of these mummies has golden decorations of Osiris, the statement said.

Artefacts such as remnants of ancient scrolls or statues depicting people buried at the site were found by archaeologists as well. They are very well preserved and the hairstyle, headdress, faces, can be easily identified.
