Captain Sir Tom Moore dies at 100 after testing positive for Covid

"The Queen is sending a private message of condolence to the family of Captain Sir Tom Moore".

Moore was hospitalized Sunday for COVID-19, his daughter said Monday.

He had not been vaccinated because he had been receiving treatment for pneumonia, his family said.

The Queen has sent condolences privately to Captain Sir Tom Moore's family following the announcement of his death on Tuesday.

"He was rejuvenated and experienced things he'd only ever dreamed of", they said in a statement, noting they had spent the last hours of his life reminiscing together.

Moore rose to prominence a year ago amid the global coronavirus pandemic, thanks to his efforts helping to raise £1,000 for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his backyard.

The veteran set out to raise £1,000 from his charity challenge but his efforts struck a chord, and praise and donations flooded in.

Captain Tom's initiative, which started in April ahead of his 100th birthday, quickly went viral, resulting in some £33 million (about $40 million) of donations pouring in from both the United Kingdom and overseas.

Sir Tom started his challenge a little over three weeks earlier, and encouraged people to continue to donate to NHS Charities Together.

Capt Sir Tom was awarded a knighthood from the Queen in the summer at Windsor Castle.

Today his family confirmed Sir Tom had died, aged 100.
