11th round of talks breaks down, deadlock on farm laws continues

After the 11th round of talks between the government and the farmer leaders at the Vigyan Bhawan on Friday remained inconclusive, Union Agriculture Minister accused the latter of not following the principles of discussion as he said that when the two parties are negotiating on an issue, one should avoid announcing new protests to create pressure as it affects the discussions. The government has also offered to form a joint committee to find mutual solutions during the period of temporary suspension. "But the government has offered to suspend them as a mark of respect towards the farmers", said Tomar, thanking the unions for their cooperation.

"We told the government that we will not agree to anything other than the repeal of the laws".

Government asked the farmers to rethink and has appealed the farmers' organizations to once again discuss about the government's proposal. On the whole issue, the farmer leaders say that no progress has come from the government. "This agitation is of the farmers and the government wants to talk about the interest of the farmers, but the interaction with the farmers' unions is not reaching any result, it means that there is some power that wants to sustain the Kisan agitation for its own benefit".

The farmer leaders claimed that they caught the man from the protest site at the Singhu border. "And we have asked the farmers to give their decision tomorrow".

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar asked the farmers to reconsider the offer for putting the Acts on hold for 12-18 months. Farmers' organizations clearly said that we do not accept the government's proposal, and will not end the farmers' movement before the withdrawal of laws.

Farm leaders on Friday said hundreds of thousands of farmers from the neighbouring states including Haryana, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh will drive tractors through New Delhi on January 26, the Republic Day national holiday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join a military parade.

On the farmers' agitation, the Central government has categorically stated that it can not give better proposals to farmers.

On January 11, the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of the three laws till further orders and appointed a four-member panel to resolve the impasse.
