Two Australian Open players have tested positive for COVID-19

More players were forced into hard quarantine ahead of the Australian Open with officials confirming on Monday that four additional participants, including an athlete, tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) among those arriving in Melbourne.

Some players have expressed anger at being classified as close contacts merely for being on board those flights with people who later tested positive and, therefore, forced into a harsher quarantine than the broader group of players who'll be allowed out of their rooms to practice for up to five hours per day.

Tiley denied accusations of preferential treatment for top players and said the organisers will try to help those affected by the positive cases on their flights.

"The 25 players on the flight will not be able to leave their hotel room for 14 days and until they are medically cleared".

The Australian Open starts in Melbourne on February 8.

There's a good chance the standard of play, at least in the opening rounds, may be a little lower than usual, given that the latest count has 72 professional players under quarantine in Melbourne. So he was given approval to fly to Australia last week.

Australia's global borders are mostly closed, although there are exemptions in special circumstances. Each of Australia's states and territories has its own border and travel restrictions, and those can change on very short notice.

Andrews came under substantial pressure in 2020 after putting the country's second-most populous state into a months-long lockdown to fight a second wave of infections of the new coronavirus.
