Tandav Controversy: Makers Extend Apology for Unintentionally Hurting Religious Sentiments

Tandav Controversy I&B Ministry summons Amazon Prime Video officials in India

An FIR has been lodged in Lucknow against the makers of Amazon Prime Video's new web series Tandav on charges of hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus and promoting enmity on grounds of religion.

The cast and crew of a popular streaming series starring Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan have apologised after politicians from the governing party called the show insensitive to Hindus. This could incite and hurt religious sentiments, he says.

India needs free, fair, non-hyphenated and questioning journalism even more as it faces multiple crises.

Kotal also stated, "I also noticed that the makers of the recent web series Tandav, that released on an OTT platform has deliberately mocked Hindu gods and disrespected Hindu religious sentiments".

Reuters partner ANI reported on Sunday that the ministry had summoned Amazon Prime Video officials in connection with the controversy.

Lucknow deputy commissioner of police (Central) Somen Barma said, "The FIR [lodged at the Hazratganj police station on Sunday] has been lodged against Aparna Purohit, an official of Amazon, series director Ali Abbas Zafar, producer Himashu Krishna Mehra, its writer Gaurav Solanki, and others".

Apple sued for not removing Telegram on the Apple App Store
Matze explained that he was given "a very small window to download it all while we were, you know, experiencing a lot of growth". The plaintiffs say that Apple knows that "Telegram is being used to intimidate, threaten, and coerce members of the public".

Madhya Pradesh minister Vishvas Sarang and assembly protem speaker Rameshwar Sharma also wrote to Javadekar, asking him to ban Tandav for allegedly "ridiculing Hindu deities". Tagging the accused persons and naming Saif Ali Khan in a tweet, he said a team of U.P. police had left for Mumbai in a auto.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati took to Twitter, saying the "objectionable" parts should be removed from the series so that the atmosphere of peace, harmony and common brotherhood was not spoilt.

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma said the web series portrays farmers and university students in a bad light and has a lot of offensive content. This was done after BJP MP Manoj Kotak sought a ban on the series for insulting Hindu gods.

In the statement, he further wrote, "The web series Tandav is a work of fiction and any resemblance to acts and persons and events are purely coincidental".

The government recently brought OTT platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar, besides other online news and current affairs content, under the ambit of the I&B ministry, giving it powers to regulate policies and rules for the digital space.
