United Nations chief says COVID-19 vaccines should be accessible globally

Trudeau

A day before the summit, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that while $10 billion has been invested in efforts to develop vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics, another $28 billion is needed for mass manufacturing, procurement and delivery of new COVID-19 vaccines around the world.

"Preventing environmental degradation, conserving, sustainably using and restoring biodiversity, preserving our oceans, promoting clean air and clean water, responding to natural disasters and extreme weather events, and tackling climate change are among the most pressing challenges of our time".

He said the group has once again played an "important and irreplaceable" role in the global war against the pandemic which has "impacted the world in a more profound way than the 2008 global financial crisis did". At first, Riyadh denied any connection to the murder, but with the passing of the days and the tests, he admitted death within the legation at the hands of officials, but denied any involvement of MBS in it.

"G20 countries must take decisive action in the boards of multilateral, regional, and national development banks, to urge them to collaborate, provide substantial concessional climate finance to developing countries, including for adaptation and resilience, and re-think their mobilization potential to unlock the trillions held by institutional investors", he said. "Without the assistance of the G20 countries, developing and underdeveloped countries will not easily recover from the pandemic and economic downturn", the president was quoted by the foreign minister as saying. The United States has declined to join under Trump.

Xi also said China is ready to aid other countries in need of coronavirus vaccines as the country now has five home-grown candidates in Phase III trials, Reuters reported.

The G-20 groups Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States and the European Union. G20 member countries represent around 85% of the world's economic output and three-quarters of global trade. The initiative has so far helped 46 of 73 eligible countries defer $5.7 billion in 2020 debt-service payments.

Mild temps continue; tracking chance of Thanksgiving showers
Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day will be mostly sunny and pleasant with highs in the upper 40s. Tuesday will see sun and clouds, and there's a chance of afternoon rain on Wednesday .

Measures for fighting the coronavirus pandemic and keeping the global economy on track are expected to be among the key topics discussed by leaders from the advanced and emerging economies during the videoconference.

The two-day online gathering came as worldwide efforts intensify for a large-scale rollout of coronavirus vaccines after a breakthrough in trials, and for G20 nations to plug a $4.5-billion funding shortfall.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday proposed using a digital health code system as a "fast track" for orderly travel between countries while calling for stronger global coordination to reestablish cross-border movement amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The second suggestion is to strengthen global disease surveillance networks so that the world will be better prepared for the next pandemic.

It means broadening the eligibility of the G20 debt initiatives to all vulnerable developing countries, including the middle-income ones that need it, he said.

"Most importantly, we have succeeded in sending out a message of hope and reassurance to our citizens and all people around the world through the Final Communique of this Leaders' Summit".
