The first Americans to receive a vaccine could be as early as the second week of December, Moncef Slaoui, the head of the U.S. government's effort to develop a vaccine against COVID-19, said.

Slaoui's comments follow the announcement on Friday that Pfizer and its partner, BioNTech, have asked the Food and Drug Administration to grant an emergency use authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine - which has been found to be 95% effective.

Vaccines will be distributed based on each state's population, Dr Slaoui said.

FDA vaccine advisors are reportedly set to meet from December 8 to 10 to discuss the approval of vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, which are allegedly 95 percent effective. A Gallup poll from Tuesday showed that 58 percent of Americans said they would get a coronavirus vaccine and 42 percent said they wouldn't.

Worldwide, almost 1.4 million people have died this year and at least 58 million cases have been registered.

On November 11, Russian Federation had said that its vaccine Sputnik V is 92 per cent effective at protecting people from COVID-19 according to the first interim analysis.

Mr Slaoui said while the vaccine is under consideration for emergency use by the FDA, the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and its Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices will look into the data on the vaccines and issue guidance to all the states regarding which populations should be prioritised for the distribution of the vaccine.

Slaoui, a former executive at GlaxoSmithKline and board member at biotech company Moderna, said he expected that children would be able to receive the vaccine by the middle of next year, and said there needed to be "expedited" trials before the vaccine became available to children.
