Late-stage trial data shows COVID-19 vaccine is over 90% effective

Coronavirus Vaccine Update Vaccine candidate from Pfizer and BioNTech proves to be highly effective in latest trials

A vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech was 90 per cent effective in preventing Covid-19 infections in ongoing Phase 3 trials, the companies announced Monday. Given the recent spike in United States infection rates, that number could be reached by early December, Bill Gruber, one of Pfizer's top vaccine scientists, said.

"The first set of results from our Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine's ability to prevent COVID-19", Dr Albert Bourla, Pfizer Chairman and CEO, was quoted as saying in the release. It was not revealed how many of them had received the vaccine candidate and how many had received a placebo.

An mRNA-based vaccine candidate against the SARS-CoV-2 being developed by Pfizer and BioNTech has shown promising results in people that weren't previously infected by the virus.

The vaccine is believed to be a way out of all the restrictions imposed on people around the world.

The Phase 3 clinical trial of BNT162b2 began on July 27 and has enrolled 43,538 participants to date, 38,955 of whom have received a second dose of the vaccine candidate as of November 8, 2020. What are the caveats?

These 5 People Will Get the COVID Vaccine First, Dr. Fauci Says
COVID-19 Vaccine Sputnik V Showed "Very High" Effectiveness in Phase 3 Trial, Says Russian Health Official. Worldwide, almost 1.4 million people have died this year and at least 58 million cases have been registered.

A key safety milestone for the vaccine candidate is expected to occur in the third week of November, as per the press release.

"It's important to note that we can not apply for FDA Emergency Use Authorization based on these efficacy results alone". Pfizer still thinks that it can produce up to 50 million doses of its vaccine by the end of this year, and as many as 1.3 billion doses through 2021.

If subsequent data read-outs continue to demonstrate efficacy, Pfizer and BioNTech will head to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to seek approval for the vaccine. Furthermore, Dr. Zayed also called on the intentional health organization to supply middle-income countries with the vaccine at affordable prices. However, so far, the government here has not acknowledged that any such attempt is underway.

In a virtual session of the World Health Organization (WHO)'s Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, Egypt's Minister of Health and Population Hala Zayed called on the global community to make COVID-19 vaccines accessible for developing nations.
