U.S. Passes 12 Million Confirmed Cases of COVID-19

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University say the number of fatalities from the coronavirus in the United States had exceeded 250,000 as of Wednesday. For the past 13 days, at least 100,000 Americans have been diagnosed with the virus each day, a stretch that includes seven days that set records in the number of new daily cases.

India comes in second place in terms of cases at 9,004,365, while the country's death toll soared to 132,162.

The countries with a death toll above 20,000 are Mexico (100,823), the United Kingdom (54,381), Italy (48,569), France (48,341), Iran (43,896), Spain (42,619), Argentina (36,790), Peru (35,446), Russian Federation (34,980), Colombia (34,929) and South Africa (20,759).

On Monday, President-elect Joe Biden expressed frustration over Trump's refusal to cooperate on the White House transition process, saying "more people may die" of coronavirus without immediate coordination on fighting the pandemic. The U.S. passed the 10 million case threshold on November 9.

The Midwest remains the hardest-hit region based on the most cases per capita with North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska the top five worst-affected U.S. states.

The decision is in line with the guidelines issued by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
