Pizza shop worker's lie sparks COVID lockdown in Australia

A Woodville Pizza Bar employee lied to contact tracers about working at the restaurant which led to a state-wide lockdown in South Australia officials said on Friday

"We have avoided a catastrophic situation in our state by following the unequivocal health advice", Mr Marshall said.
"We are interested in speaking to at least two other people who we believe can assist us with our inquiries, and my investigators will remain in contact with those in due course".

The lie led the authorities to assume the man had caught the virus during a very short exposure, suggesting the strain was highly contagious.

No further details have been released about the man, and Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said current laws do not allow him to be arrested or charged.

"We now know they are a very close contact of another person who has been confirmed as being positive with Covid".

"This is the one element that pushed us from the level of restrictions we were implementing on Tuesday to a much harsher regime", he said.

"One of the close contacts linked to the Woodville pizza bar deliberately misled our contact-tracing team", Marshall told reporters.

South Australia, with a population of about 1.7 million, began a six-day lockout on Wednesday Corona virus.

"The Emergency Management Act requires people to provide information upon request", said Stevens.

"What we can say is that we absolutely were looking at facing a second wave", Dr Spurrier said, claiming she had "no regrets" about her decision.

"I'm taking up quarantine space that could be going to other Queenslanders, even overseas travellers, who need it more".

The Parafield cluster now spans 26 cases and more than 5400 contacts are in isolation.

It turns out, however, that he had been in close contact with the shop's security guard, who was among an outbreak of 36 positive cases in Adelaide.

She said efforts were continuing to put a "double ring-fence" around the outbreak to limit the risk of more widespread transmission. NSW recorded its first 14-day streak of no locally transmitted coronavirus cases since the Crossroads Hotel cluster sparked a resurgence of the virus in the state.

And after having other states in Australia shut their borders to Victoria, the state has chose to close its border with neighboring South Australia, which is experiencing a new spike in cases.

But he said the state was "not out of the woods yet".

South Australia will revert to a series of similar restrictions imposed at the beginning of the week from midnight on Saturday.

"This is still a very risky cluster and our our health experts remain extremely concerned", he said.
