Lekki Tollgate Shooting: We stand by our report

Nigeria threatens to sanction CNN over investigation and denies security forces shot at protesters

At a press conference held inside the Army Resource Centre, Mambilla Barracks, Abuja, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohamed insisted that there were no deaths resulting from the shootings at the Lekki toll plaza on the night of October 20, 2020 as soldiers only shot blank bullets in the air. The verbal attack against the CNN by Lai Muhammed is an evidence that the government knew what happened to the protesters on October 20th because only the guilty are afraid. why is the Federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari afraid of THE TRUTH when CONSCIENCE IS AN OPEN WOUND WHICH ONLY TRUTH CAN HEAL?

He added that the same can not be said of those that killed security personnel in a barbaric manner.

After previous calls to make #EndSARS a reality met stiff resistance, this latest campaign left the social media to the streets immediately after the nation marked its 60th independence anniversary.

"The testimony of Brig".

@aproko_doctor wrote, I love how CNN is exposing what really happened at the Lekki Tollgate, unfortunately, in Nigeria, the NBC sanctioned media houses for using the same videos that CNN used in analysing the event.

Nigeria should sanction CNN for a report that the country's military shot and killed protesters demonstrating against police brutality, a minister said on Thursday, but the US channel defended its reporting.

He said before deployment, the soldiers were briefed on the Rules of Engagement, which they adhered to all through.

Eruptions in Ethiopia could drive hundreds of thousands across Sudan — Ethiopia UN
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has denied claims by Ethiopia that he is supporting the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). On Friday, Tigrayan forces fired rockets at the capital of the neighboring Amhara region, possibly targeting its airport.

On Wednesday, CNN published an investigation on the Lekki incident, alleging that soldiers used live rounds on protesters who had converged on Lekki tollgate on October 20. "This is one of the dangers of fake news and disinformation".

"While we await the Judicial Panel in Lagos to unravel what transpired at the Lekki toll gate, what we can say, based on testimonies available in the public space, is that the world may have just witnessed, for the very first time ever, a massacre without bodies", he added.

The House committee, led by its chairman, Abdulrasaq Namdas, disclosed earlier that they were at the Army headquarters to brief the COAS about their observations during their oversight visit to the military formations across the country.

Mr Mohammed said misinformation and fake news played huge roles in the violence that played out in the protest.

Mohammed said they did not see anything wrong in the public and private properties that were burnt or looted.

"Pictures of persons, including some celebrities, who were supposedly killed at the Lekki Toll Gate by soldiers, were circulated widely, only for those persons to refute such claims or for the discerning to disprove such posts".

CNN stands by its investigation, a company spokesperson said.
